2012-10-12 Road Trip Day 2 (Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado)

Crazy start of day. Too much new stuff to learn all at once (… batch upload of pics for blogging, car navigation system, tracking device, GoPro video camera, new iPhone 5, tweeting). Almost had nuclear meltdown as we realized, heading out of Vegas, there was only 1 bar (of 20) of fuel left. Luckily was able to head back to the station and fill “again” (or at least remember to activate the pump after hooking up and getting the credit card approved a second time). All this and forgetting the time zone change (which IS factored into my planning worksheet), put us behind schedule. So we rolled into Washington City at 3:30 pm (MT) instead of 1:00. Luckily the Clean City Coordinator, Robin Erickson, was able to notify the appropriate folks about the change in time.

Attached pics need review and cleanup.

2012-10-11 Road Trip Day 1 (California & Nevada)

Rainy morning with a rainbow as we’re leaving Irvine.  The day cleared up when we arrived and while we were on the Santa Monica pier it turned into a perfect day for the launch on the pier.  Too bad we started on a working day.  A lot of my friends and family couldn’t take the day off work.

From the Santa Monica pier, we headed to Robertson’s Honda in Palmdale for a media event and fueling.  From there, we skipped a planned fueling stop in Victorville and made it all the way to Las Vegas, with only a bio-break at the Valley Wells rest area east of Baker.  The reward at the end of the day was the new gourmet Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar’s Palace… way too much, so no more buffets for us.

My pics are below.  Other pics can be found at GreenAcrossAmerica.com.

2012-10-07 Stops from Lake Tahoe to Irvine (via the 99)

The station at South Lake Tahoe Airport is over by the blue box in the far left corner of the parking lot.

Stopped to stretch the legs and admire the American River below

Yay…able to stand again.

2012-10-06 Food & Wine Event at Harrah’s

Gary got freebie tickets to the VIP event Sat afternoon…

Over 40 vendors (14 food, the rest beverages)

OK – must be the iPhone is not behaving.  I didn’t have that much wine, and can you believe this guy ran out of sake?

Eye candy for the guys (don’t know why the iPhone is working well… can’t be operator error!)

Wow!  Funny how the iPhone pics clear up on the important stuff…

Lots of entertainment also provided.

No hiking for me this trip.  I did this to myself, leg gave out just walking down stairs when we checked in last night.  Must remember that laptop plus bottle of wine in bag can throw off one’s balance).

Heading back to the room..

And the grand prize…

2012-10-05 CNG stations on the Way to Lake Tahoe

Left home with a full fill and finally got on the road around noon to head to Santa Clarita for the fill to get us to Los Banos.  Went around I-5 traffic by heading up the 57 fwy to the 210 west to the I-5.  Got a good fill at Santa Clarita.

Darn… forgot to get pics of the Santa Clarita station for CNGPrices.com.  Oh well, maybe get those on the trip back.

We had 1 bar left at the exit to Hwy 165 towards Los Banos (we had the air conditioning on for most of the trip as temps where in the high 70’s/low 80’s).  From Santa Clarita to Los Banos, it’s 232 miles.

Here’s the PG&E station in Los Banos.

In Sacramento, we found the CNG station in Sacramento (on Florin-Perkins Rd) had the gates closed at 7:00 pm despite 24 hours daily listing on CNGNow).  CNGPrices did indicate limited M-F hours of operation (we won’t say who forgot to check).  Didn’t get pictures of that station either.

Had to head over to Davis (13 miles away) to fuel… a real pain to find as Apple moved away from Google Maps on our iPhones. No directions listed at either CNGNow or CNGPrices.  I’ll have to remember to provide them an update.

Got to Lake Tahoe around 10:30 pm after all the running around.

CNG Station on Riverside Dr. in St. George

Missed this on the way out (going north, exit at Bluff St. and go east… it becomes East Riverside Dr).  No traveler facilities here, but there’s a Costco’s a bit further north (exit at Greensprings Drive and go east; it’ll be about 3 blocks down on the right).  Interesting in that the St. George Costco has some self-checkout lines (good for shoppers with a few items).  Should have got a few pics of that.  Wonder when they’ll hit California? Image

Same price as the Questar in Hurricane, $1.49/gge*.   Fill-up took only 2.962 g ($4.40); it was only 1/2 hr from St. George to the Kolob Canyons.

*gge = gasoline gallon equivalent (the amount of alternative fuel it takes to equal the energy content of one liquid gallon of gasoline)

Nice visitor center

Love the color of the roads.

Nice sign with the names of the surrounding geography

Had a lovely hike on this trail.

Heading back (can you see the road?)

I really was there!

Great stop for travelers with a minimart and deli

Topped off here before heading on to Zion’s Kolob Canyons.  Cost was $1.49/gge* (took 6.505g from Vegas) for a total of $9.67.
